How to Furnish a Small Bedroom

How to Furnish a Small Bedroom

Living in a small space comes with its own set of challenges, and maximizing the usable real estate within the house is the real deal. Each room has its own layout, which needs to be utilized efficiently, and the bedroom is no different. In fact, furnishing a small bedroom can become rather difficult once you understand that aside from the bed, there are a lot of things that will need to be arranged within the room. However, there is no need to worry: we bring you the answer on how to furnish a small bedroom.

For furnishing a small bedroom, creativity is key here. Utilizing all the space you have for the bedroom can become a challenge, but with these tips in mind, you can do an incredible job and turn that small bedroom into an oasis of relaxation and practicality. Let’s look at the tips you need to know to furnish a small bedroom.

Bedroom furnishing

How to furnish a small bedroom

Starting with the tips on how to furnish a small bedroom, here are the best ones.

Start with the bed

The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom, obviously, and for smaller bedrooms, utilizing the space efficiently involves placing the bed in the right place. The bed needs to be the right size so it doesn’t overcrowd the room and leaves space to move around. With the right bed size, the next step is placement, which needs to be done in a manner that leaves a good amount of moving space around the bed. The placement needs to be pragmatic and balanced, which, when done right, will even make the small bedroom look bigger.

Use colors for a warm, cozy feel

A small bedroom does not mean it must be cramped or feel too little. It is all down to perception, and one way you can maximize your bedroom space without physically adding to it is by including tones of dark and warm colors, which give it a sense of breadth and will make the room feel a lot larger than it really is. While this is true for the whole house or apartment you might have, extensive customization or personalization is usually reserved for bedrooms, and so, by using such colors, not only will the room feel a lot bigger, but it will also have a rather homely, cozy feel to it.

Combine elements to maximize the usage of space

In a small space, you’re better off combining different elements (if possible) rather than placing separate elements throughout the room. This is obviously done to minimize wastage of the real estate available in a small bedroom. For instance, one really great idea for that is to combine your dressing table and your workstation in a singular alcove, complete with drawers to keep your things out of the way. Include a mirror in the layout, and you will have an amazing double utilization of a singular space and a testament to your creativity in tackling such situations.

Use bedside lights instead of table lamps

Table lamps require the usage of large-sized side tables. Since that might not be possible in a small bedroom, let's get to the next best thing: using small side tables and swapping out lamps for bedside lights. These bedside lights attach to the headboard and actually provide better lighting than compared to bedside lamps. They are very much moveable, giving you a much better range of light for when you’re trying to read a book in bed. With the small bedside table, you can use it to place your phone, charger, smartwatch, or whatever; save your space for the things that matter and still enjoy creative lighting solutions.

Double purpose: use the windows

Much like how spaces need to have two uses for small bedrooms, the windows are also one place where the same can be done. For smaller bedrooms, heavy drapes and elaborate curtains is a big no-no; they rob space and only serve to load a room with unnecessary opulence. Instead, try and utilize the space around the window and make it a multipurpose affair: use the space under the window for storage and use the storage top as seating. The storage is perfect for seasonal clothes, bedding items, or any other wardrobe items you might want to keep out of sight. Doing it that way will not only beautify the space but will also make it a practical place.

Choose modular storage with sliding doors

In furnishing a small bedroom, storage space comes in as primary. This way, you can keep items out of sight and use all that real estate to your advantage. However, storage can become an issue in rooms, which is where modular storage comes in. These minimalist pieces fit well into the modern décor of any room, and you can use sliding doors to further reinforce the concept of space-saving. Modular storage will include various segments for bedroom or household necessities that would otherwise take up a lot of space, and a sliding door means that they won’t be out on display all the time. Plus, they really sell the whole minimalist décor idea.

Accentuate the room with mirrors

Mirrors have the unique ability to make a place look more roomy than it is. Call it the reflection effect or whatever; by inculcating mirrors in your room, preferably more than two, you will use strategic lighting to make the room look bigger, and if you have panel mirrors on the furniture, this will look even better and contribute to the accentuation of the room. On the wall, try using a full-length mirror that extends to the floor, and for the furniture, try using paneled mirrors and small, rounded ones as well. This will contribute to a great look for your small bedroom.

Light curtains, more natural light

Aside from ample electrical lighting in the room, for those lazy Sundays, you need plenty of natural light as well. This is why heavy drapes and curtains are not recommended. Instead, using natural light can be advantageous since it will fill the room more opulently, and your room will feel warmer and more cocoon-like, which is apparently something that is valued a lot in smaller bedrooms and spaces.

In a nutshell

Small bedrooms should not mean that you compromise on requisites like space, storage, or amenities. By decorating and furnishing your small bedroom using these tips, you will not only maximize space and usage, but by playing around with the aesthetics and paint colors, you can actually make the room feel a lot bigger than it actually is, and really make it into a lovely, comfy bedroom with plenty of creative options to utilize every inch of the real estate.
